EASY DATE CARAMEL SAUCE

This Easy Date Caramel Sauce is the perfect naturally sweet dip or topping for all your favorite healthy treats—and it comes together in minutes!

While it’s not your traditional caramel, the rich, deep sweetness of the dates gives it that classic flavor we all love—without the refined sugar.

It’s a big hit in our home—my kids (and yes, this mom too!) can’t get enough of it with crisp apple slices or spread on toast for a quick and satisfying snack.

HOW TO PREPARE THIS EASY DATE CARAMEL SAUCE

This recipe cannot be easier; you need only three ingredients! Blend and enjoy.

I realized about this mix of flavors by preparing my Vegan Banana Whole Wheat Muffins. When I tried it, I noticed that the combination of Medjool dates, plant-based milk, and vanilla extract created that caramel flavor.

This sauce is a healthier yet flavorful alternative to traditional caramel recipes, which can be enjoyed as is or added to your favorite treats and desserts, including pancakes, crepes, waffles, ice cream, slices of bread, and more!

You can also try a more Argentine-style recipe and make this Dulce de Leche.

For the preparation, you’ll need:

  • Medjool dates: these are the star of the recipe. I love them for their sugary and caramel flavor.
  • Canned Coconut milk lite or light: to help with the creaminess without adding too much fat. You can also use any other plant-based milk if you don’t like or can’t use coconut milk. The texture changes a little bit, but it works well for the purpose of this sauce.
  • Vanilla extract: to enhance the flavor.
  • Pinch of salt: optional.

To prepare this easy date caramel soak the dates in hot water for 15 to 20 minutes, to make them softer.

Drain them and then blend all the ingredients until smooth.

And enjoy your sweet, healthy treat!

  • Pinch sea salt Optional.

Instructions

Notes

  • * I’m using Canned Coconut milk (lite or light) to help with the creaminess without adding too much fat. You can also use any other plant-based milk if you prefer or are unable to use coconut milk. The texture changes slightly, but it works well for this sauce.
  • ** I prefer using a bullet blender for smooth results.
  • Store this caramel sauce in an airtight container in the fridge for up to two weeks.
  • Add more milk for a thinner sauce or more dates for a thicker sauce.
  • You can freeze portions of this sauce in ice cubes and thaw them as needed (keep for up to a month).
